Rowing Ergometer

A "Concept II Indoor Rower" rowing ergometer is used to simulate rowing in the lab. As demonstrated in the rowing movie, the rower pulls on a small handle to which is attached a chain. This chain wrapped around on a air resisted fly wheel, which creates resistance against chain extension. The rower sits on a seat mounted on rails, allowing the rower to move the pelvis forwards during the recovery phase and backward during the driving phases. The feet are fixed on holders with nylon straps. A load cell is mounted on the chain next to the pull handle, allowing for the measurement of forces exerted by the handle on the chain. Video data can also be acquired and analyzed with the motion analysis system.
